Tribute To The Re-Up

This could easily be construed as a valentine's day mix, given that i'm posting this on february 13th, but it's not. Unless of course, the love of your life is DANCING. It's a tribute to my homies the Crimp Yr Hair djs. They came up to boston for a one night only birthday bash and mixed the hell out of some killer dance beats. In their first outside of philly gig they more then held their own. I'm at once proud and honored they played at my 30th.

"The Re-Up" is a monthly dance party CYH hosts on the first saturday of every month. It's held at a bar called Sal's in downtown Philly. I've had the fortune of attending and sometimes djing there and it's always the best night of my life. Okay, so, without further ado, here 'tis:

tracklisting

N0.1 RE-UP DANCE MIX (56:40)

1.) No.1 - Re-up Intro
2.) Goose - Bring it on
3.) Robyn - Crash and Burn Girl (Jesper Dahlba Remix)
4.) Juiceboxxx - Sweat
5.) Dsico - Morning City Stirs
6.) Van She - Sex City (Nightmoves vocals)
7.) Bassment Jaxx - U Don't Know Me (Jaxx Houz Club Mix)
8.) Yo Magesty - Club Action
9.) Run DMC - It's Like That (remix)
10.) New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (Van She remix)
11.) Cansei Ser Sexy - Alala (Princess Superstar Remix)
12.) Digitalism - Zdarlight (Discrodrome Remix)
13.) Robyn - Konitchiwa Bitches (Trentmoller mix)

(This mix was recorded live off of my computer. I just downloaded a new dj program and practiced with it for a couple of hours, then made this mix. it's full of transitioning problems and level issues, but it was live, and without the aid of any kind of cue channel.)

M.I.A.: Pirate or Embassador? The case of two bird flu's.

M.I.A. just posted up on her myspace page a video for her new song "Bird Flu". (It's all over the likes of GVB and others, but i'm posting it here just for reference.)

The vid is rad and the beat is pretty tight. Tribal drums, rooster samples, and kids yelling are all awesome, but the song kinda goes nowhere. Maybe it's the popist or dance dj in me, but it just seems like the song could've been more effective with a different/better arrangement. Intros? Outros? Bridges? Breakdowns? Pinnacles? Ecstasy? Indiscernible.

What's more, it can't even hold a candle to the original bird flu song.

The BBC popped the story last May about a Bird Flu Dance invented by a mister DJ Lewis, who i suppose inspired musicians Sample King and 1Dance to create its theme song. Since, the song and dance has, well, spread like the virus it is named after. It has journeyed from the Ivory Coast to the Caribbean and the americas, inspiring hundreds of YouTube videos doing their best renditions. Take this instructional video as a primer course:

now that you know how to do it, see if you can practice and top this lass:

But back to the point, when I first heard that M.I.A. had a new song coming out called "bird flu" i was a bit worried that she was going to co-opt the popularity of the Ivorian song, and thus, echo what she did with baile funk and Arular. She did not, which is good, but what she did instead was make another bird flu song that doesn't even deserve to be in the same petri dish with the original.
