M.I.A.: Pirate or Embassador? The case of two bird flu's.

M.I.A. just posted up on her myspace page a video for her new song "Bird Flu". (It's all over the likes of GVB and others, but i'm posting it here just for reference.)

The vid is rad and the beat is pretty tight. Tribal drums, rooster samples, and kids yelling are all awesome, but the song kinda goes nowhere. Maybe it's the popist or dance dj in me, but it just seems like the song could've been more effective with a different/better arrangement. Intros? Outros? Bridges? Breakdowns? Pinnacles? Ecstasy? Indiscernible.

What's more, it can't even hold a candle to the original bird flu song.

The BBC popped the story last May about a Bird Flu Dance invented by a mister DJ Lewis, who i suppose inspired musicians Sample King and 1Dance to create its theme song. Since, the song and dance has, well, spread like the virus it is named after. It has journeyed from the Ivory Coast to the Caribbean and the americas, inspiring hundreds of YouTube videos doing their best renditions. Take this instructional video as a primer course:

now that you know how to do it, see if you can practice and top this lass:

But back to the point, when I first heard that M.I.A. had a new song coming out called "bird flu" i was a bit worried that she was going to co-opt the popularity of the Ivorian song, and thus, echo what she did with baile funk and Arular. She did not, which is good, but what she did instead was make another bird flu song that doesn't even deserve to be in the same petri dish with the original.

different parts of the world have their own dances. just because jamaica had a bird flu dance doesn't mean they ripped 'em off. did you see that village in the video? do you think they get to be up on what's hip by logging onto the internet?

thinkkkk about that one ;)
