ptvn's year end list
ok so this is a bit later than everyone else's lists, but i'm one-upping it and gonna provide download links! anyway i'll cut to the chase:
this is my list of albums (and other stuff) that rocked me this year. most of them probably came to the surface during 2006, but not all. in no specific order: (i'm gonna keep the rants short, you can read about all these artists/albums all over the internet)
teddybears - soft machine: this is an amazing album, but not all the way through. my problem is the with jamaican/reggae-style vocals on some of the tracks. i'm not even sure what to call them. but i can't get down with those tracks. the rest rule. (update: some of the older teddybears LPs are awesome. many of the same tracks, with earlier versions that are funkier and more experiemental. newer versions are more stripped down to the pop formula, also less reggae junk)
datarock - datarock: awesome LP all the way through. found these guys through a mixtape mac made back in april.
lily allen : my kind of album. busts through barriers while being a completely easy-to-digest pop album.
gil mantera's party dream : cool record, a fun listen. i love it because i hate it. (see em at PA's lounge january 12 with 440R bands cassette and plunge into death)
robyn - robyn: i'm gonna keep my mouth shut and just say: it came out a couple years ago but i just got into it this year. so into it.
the blow - paper television: what i'd expect from the blow, but better
peter bjorn and john - writer's block : first listen of this stuff i couldn't figure out when it was from. turns out it wasn't even out yet. (turns out their old albums are really good too, vocals sound familiar, maybe dopo yume can't place it right now though)
mystery jets - making dens: weird londoners made a weird record that is very well written.
worst album of the year: dj shadow - trust me and don't bother even downloading it. save the room on your HD.
song of the year: justice vs simian - we are your friends : again, not from this year, but this song just rocked my summer so hard. (if you don't already have this, please turn off your computer and get out there)
d00ds that rocked my year:
ed banger records - justice, uffie, dj mendi, mr flash
kitsune records - amazing comps and 12"s
mstrkrft - a couple killer remixes and some nice LP tracks doin it
simian mobile disco - see mstrkrft
david day, eric pearson, and the thunderdome krew - great to meet these guys this year, thanks d00ds!
last minute addition: kitsune maison 3
side note: turns out teddybears is fronted by 2 brothers. 1 is the guy from the band caesar's palace (known as caesars in USA) and the other produced the robyn album mentioned above.
