10 Things To Look Forward To In 2007
f*ck a year end list. it's all about the future. The following is ten music related items I can't wait to experience in 2007:
10.) The Pack. Big ups to Marya of 280 Studios who tipped me off to the burgeoning phenomena that is The Pack a few months back. Now that they're on Jive/Zomba, I expect big 'tings from them this year. For those unfamiliar, The Pack are a band of high school skater kids in Berkeley, CA who got together and wrote a song in tribute to their favorite shoe brand: VANS. Picture 4 Pharrell juniors, with bay area hyphy sensibilities, and a youthful, playful innocence that is lacking in modern hip-hop today. Plus they just might be the missing link that will unite skate punks and hardcore hip-hop heads. Skate, thrash, mosh, and wear ice that'd make a yeti jealous.
and their van's video
9.) Von Sudenfed. Ladies and gentlemen, a supergroup is in our midst. Mr. Mark E. Smith has partnered up with the oh so formidable, yet strangely forgotten about in America, Mouse On Mars to create a three-headed beast James Murphy is gonna wish didn't exist. They got two streamable songs up on their myspace. One is super dope and the other is just okay, but I'm looking forward to see where this project heads in 2007.
8.) M.I.A. It's about time for a Galang follow-up, and this is the year. Rumored to be titled "Power Power", M.I.A.'s future release will feature production work by mostly her (huh?) but may incorporate the work from Three 6 Mafia, possibly Diplo, and possibly Timbaland.
7.) Doom and Ghost, Finally? Swift and Changeable, the heavily anticipated, and annoyingly delayed collaborative record between Ghostface Killah and Doom (no "MF" anymore although he still rocks the metal face) is supposed to finally come out, perhaps as early as next month. Lex Recordings will handle the UK distro duties and Nature Sounds will keep us warm on the home front. Read the exclusive interview MassAppeal copped over here.
6.) Crimp Yr Hair DJs. For those of you sleepin', Philadelphia is quickly becoming the Ibiza of the Northeast Corridor. Dave P, has str8 up turned Philly into a destination for Europe's electro no_wave/neu_rave elite. The likes of Digitalism, Data Rock, Boys Noize, New Young Pony Club, and Simian Mobile Disco filter in through over-the-top monthly parties like [click] on a regular basis. The scene has changed remarkably since the days when Hollertronix ruled the party culture with an iron fist. Plus, local upstarts like the Crimp Yr Hair dj krew are quietly mashing out their own original redos and edits, while carving out a niche of followers of their own, hosting new monthly parties such as The Re-Up.
5.) Squids back in the studio. It's going down, cousin. Retreat style. February. In the woods of Upstate New York. The end result will be brilliant, I'm sure.
4.) Timbaland Presents: Shock Value.
Maybe I have way too high expectations for this, but i think this album will be dope. Guest appearances by JT, Nelly Furtado, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, The Hives, Bjork, and Elton John, to name a few.
3.) This year we'll be able to understand crystals. Crystal Understanding's debut LP, Hold the Gem, will be released this year! It's a promise. March-ish is the word on the street and will feature the recording, mixing, and mastering work of uber-producer MicL PTVN.
2.) UV Protection. UV's killer follow-up Clean. Modern. Comfortable. gets a proper release on Feb. 3rd, with a huge party to celebrate. Here's the deets:

1.) New WU-TANG ALBUM!!! I am so unbelievably stoked for this. Wu Fam is back again. Read the official myspace post about it:
Wu-Tang Clan's reunion with Loud Records founder Steve Rifkind is official, as the group has announced a new album titled 8 Diagrams, which will hit stores this summer on Rifkind's SRC label, through Universal Records.
8 Diagrams, which is named after a Kung-Fu epic, is the the first new album from Wu-Tang Clan in six years.
The album will feature RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon the Chef, Ghostface Killah, Inspektah Deck, Masta Killa and U-God, all original members of the Wu-Tang Clan.
The new album will also contain an unreleased performance that will show fans why deceased group member Ol' Dirty Bastard "was considered one of the illest MCs ever," before dying of a heart attack in Nov. 2004.
“This is the perfect time for us to come back, the stars are aligned,” RZA said. “It’s like when we first started with Steve. We put out real hip-hop at a time when it was turning into pop or R&B. We brought the focus back to the music in its rawest form, without studio polish or radio hooks.”
RZA founded the group with GZA and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, who is memorialized on the song “Life Changes."
The group has released several groundbreaking albums including Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993), Wu-Tang Forever (1997) and 2001's Iron Flag.
According to the RZA, the new album will be a "conjunction of creative and corporate thinking by the whole group.”
“People want something that gives them an adrenaline rush,” RZA continued. “We’re here to supply that fix. How could hip-hop be dead if Wu-Tang is forever? We’re here to revive the spirit and the economics and bring in a wave of energy that has lately dissipated.”- written By Nolan Strong
The "oh sevs" is our year people. let's make it happen!
