International Party Underground # 2- Hott Beat

Last summer I was down in the DC area checking out some Boston bands on tour at a crazy house party when I noticed something odd about my fellow party goers, I had seen many of them before. At every turn there was some sort of indie rock celebrity in the house, Tobi Vail was drinking Sparks in the kitchen, Allison Wolfe was picking through the cds in by the stereo, Mary Timony was leaning (eyebrowless) against the banister, and I mistakenly bumped into Guy Picciotto in line for the bathroom. I knew that they were not at the party for a couple of unknown bands from Boston, but when the headliners went on I knew what had pulled them into the suburbs, it was the unstoppable keyboard/vocal duo Hott Beat.

Hottessa (vocals) and KY (keyboards) bring furious programmed beats together with hyperactive keyboard lines and wailing vocals to create those sweaty dance party jams for the basement. Hotessa may hide behind a
mask but that can’t hide her amazing voice or spastic energy on the mic. Lyrics range from the political to the personal, but while the subject matter might change the bpms rarely do as the hyperkinetic sounds picks up somewhat where Le Tigre left (or as some would say fell) off. KY’s Roland keyboard lines give off the squeezed down, souped up mid eighties Prince sound that always gets the kids moving.

You can take a taste yourself
here or
here. Or you can catch them live on Thursday the 15th at Great Scott in Allston with Miss Fairchild, Big Digits, and some equally hott djing from Providence party rulers Certified Bananas or on the 16th in Providence at Oakie St. with Big Digits and the Awesome Brothers.
